Convincing others of the need to change is often a challenge. The secret to overcome this is to involve people early in the change process, to generate the solution and own the change itself.

Why should someone consider applying at Allianz, and specifically at Allianz in Asia?

Allianz and Asia is the perfect match-up. Allianz is one of the leading and most recognizable brands in financial services worldwide. Asia is the fastest growing market, with a rich tradition, diverse culture, beautiful landscape, great food and friendly people. If you seek to be part of a strong global community and experience the local heritage, then ‘Allianz in Asia’ is your ideal career destination. In addition Allianz offers fantastic development opportunities… for example I’m on the Regional Operations/IT Leadership Development Program where the focus is on building a strong OPS/IT talent pool and to prepare and equip us to take up senior leadership roles. Being part of this makes me feel valued and supported in my career ambitions.

Describe your working environment / company culture:

One word – excellent. The people here are friendly, supportive, passionate and have a great sense of pride. For me, the one distinct quality about this company is: the strong bond amongst staff, regardless of function, location and position. You can call up anyone in the organization and ask them out for coffee, and it’s quite common.

What are the challenges you face in your role?

Much of the work I do is about introducing and managing change. People are habitual, and are used to a certain ways of doing things. So, convincing others of the need to change is often a challenge. The secret to overcome this is to involve people early in the change process, allow them the space to see the issue through a different lens, to generate the solution and own the change itself.

Tell us a little bit about your background:

I have been with Allianz Malaysia for 10 years now, having joined the company in 2004 right after completing my bachelor degree. While Allianz remains my first and only company I have worked for, my present job is the fourth within this organization. In these amazing 10 years, I had the opportunity to assume several interesting and challenging roles in various functions. I started my career in Actuarial, moved to Strategy & Planning, followed by Branch Operations and now the Office of Chief Operating Officer.

Describe a day in your working life

Any work day involves the following 3 broad activities; plan, manage and communicate. Since a large part of my job is project-based, most of my time is spent in interacting with people. The type of work and people I meet with can vary from day to day, week and month. Some days do require more coffee than others, but there is always something new to look forward to each day.

What do you like most in your job?

I find the flexible, non-routine and autonomous nature of my job in the COO Office very refreshing. Working with like minded colleagues and a supportive COO allows me to apply problem solving, creativity and good judgement. It is truly an enjoyable experience, with a great sense of accomplishment. That is what keeps me interested to go to the office every morning.
