I quickly realized the scale of Allianz as a global company. There are lots of dedicated people behind the scenes that are the engines that power this company forward; People whom I found to be genuinely enjoyable to work and socialize with.
Let me share with you the chronicle of an incredible chapter of my placement year…
My story in Allianz started back in June where I simply had to know how working at a multi-national company compared to working at start-ups. Around that time, Allianz was celebrating Diversity Day, which got me curious.
A bit more about Diversity Day: this day aims to promote diversity, inclusion, and equality, and for the occasion, the AllAbility team hosted a job shadowing day. I would like to thank the two inspiring people that have sponsored this event, Clem and Anna. I would also like to thank Anastastiya and the team for making this event a success.
Allianz is a leading insurance firm. And the fact that they are advocating diversity is reason alone to investigate what it could be like to work there. So I packed my bags and off I went to Munich.
When I arrived, I work shadowed a manager from Group Market Management. I quickly realized the scale of Allianz as a global company. There are lots of dedicated people behind the scenes that are the engines that power this company forward; People whom I found to be genuinely enjoyable to work and socialize with.
As I became even more curious about Allianz I decided to submit an application for an internship position and soon enough I secured it!
First let me tell you this, since starting the internship in September I discovered that no days are the same at Allianz, every day you are learning new things.
I worked in Group HR, specifically in Reward & Performance department. Group HR are in charge of all recruitments and things that are associated with it. I was involved in improving the Job Offer tool, which is being used by SE and its operating entity around the world.
What do you like most about your job?
- Warm and welcoming colleagues
- An exceptional opportunity to gain new knowledge, expertise and experiences in crucial business fields
- Great networking possibilities
- An open-minded approach to every situation
From day one my manager ensured that I was settled in and within the first week I had a good idea of the project that I was embarking on.
The colleagues were warm and welcoming and I settled in quickly, I was invited to as many meetings as I could attend and this gave me a very good overview of what goes on in the department and its importance to Allianz overall.
This was one of many factors where you have the opportunity gain knowledge and learn from others, for example having “Lunch Appointments”; this is a great way to get to know the people better and of course to strengthen your network and the lunch itself… was delicious!
What made an impact on my during my time here was the fact that when I realized HR is an important attribute to any organization. They are the ones who diversify the workforce thus making the company more inclusive. They are the ones who bring in top talents that in turn are capable of driving the company achieve grand visions.
This impact is something I will remember for time and this is a result of being open minded. To summarize –
Life is a journey of exploration – Always be curious, stay hungry and stay foolish.
Would I recommend you to apply for an internship at Allianz? Of course! There is an incredible wealth of knowledge to be gained and the fact that Allianz SE is based in Munich is itself a major factor as Munich is simply an amazing place to be.”
